Social Worker – Financial Empowerment  Program 

Location: This is a remote position in Ontario; however, candidates must be residents of Ottawa for occasional in-person meetings.

Start Date: ASAP

Duration: One year with the possibility of extension

Hours: 37.5 hours per week

About Us: The Canadian Center for Women’s Empowerment is based in Ottawa, and the only Canadian non-profit dedicated to addressing all forms of Economic Abuse and economic injustice. CCFWE combats systemic barriers faced by women experiencing Economic Abuse survivors through education, community based research, economic and financial empowerment, policy influencing and system change. Our work applies an equity-lens to policy, and is informed by evidence and lived experience of victim-survivors. Our work focuses on Economic Abuse prevention and response through meaningful community engagement. We bring violence and trauma -informed practices to inform policy systems, enabling victims, survivors, and their families to achieve economic empowerment.

Project Overview: This project aims to provide trauma- and violence-informed financial empowerment support to survivors of  domestic abuse in Ontario through workshop, referrals and support. 

Primary Job Responsibilities: 

The Social Worker will provide direct support to victims of abuse and violence, offering counseling, emotional support, and connecting them with essential community resources. This role includes developing educational materials, advocating for victims’ needs, and ensuring they have access to services that promote healing and empowerment.

The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of the barriers faced by marginalized groups, including visible minorities, newcomers, refugees, and racialized women, and the challenges they encounter in employment, housing, healthcare, and education. Experience in program development, collaboration with community stakeholders, and knowledge of domestic abuse and social services in Canada are essential.

 

Report to: Program Director

 

Client Advocacy and Support: 

  • Conduct client assessments and make referrals to essential domestic abuse and financial services.
  • Assist clients in accessing financial resources such as emergency funds, public assistance programs, and legal aid.
  • Stay informed about best practices in financial literacy and abuse support.
  • Collaborate with legal advocates, counselors, and community organizations to provide comprehensive support. 
  • Oversee one-on-one coaching to help survivors set and achieve their economic goals with financial advisors.

Project Management:

  • Oversee the development of resources for victims and financial institutions to guide their interactions with economic abuse survivors and ensure their needs are met.
  • Ensure compliance with funders’ requirements and use assessment tools to measure project success.
  • Ensure capturing, reviewing, and analyzing project delivery based on survivor needs.
  • Support the CCFWE team in developing educational materials to raise awareness about economic abuse across the program.
  • Prepare project updates, reports, promising practices, success stories, and lessons learned, and present them to supervisors and others as requested.
  • Attend community events and workshops to stay informed about available resources and emerging issues related to economic abuse and financial empowerment
  • Design, implement, and evaluate programs aimed at supporting survivors in their recovery and growth using a trauma-informed, culturally sensitive, anti-racist, and anti-oppressive approach.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to identify gaps in services and develop innovative solutions.

Resources coordination and referral

  • Connect clients with community resources, financial institutions, and services (e.g., credit counseling, housing support) that align with their financial goals and recovery plans. 
  • Create educational materials, workshops, and presentations to raise awareness of victim services, rights, and preventative measures.
  • Develop resources to help victims navigate the justice system, access financial aid, and build resilience.
  • Engage in community outreach efforts to distribute educational resources and information about support services.
  • Ensure project resources are accessible online through CCFWE’s platforms.
  • Organize financial literacy training, panels, and webinars for women victims of domestic economic abuse.
  • Collaborate with local women’s services, shelters, and banks to inform and guide program development, emphasizing the inclusion of women from marginalized backgrounds.
  • Represent CCFWE at stakeholder events and within communities.
  • Advocate for policies and practices that support survivor empowerment and well-being with the CCFWE Taskforce.
  • Stay updated on best practices and emerging trends in survivor support and economic empowerment.

Project Communication:

  • Work with the CCFWE team to ensure project information, stories and materials are accessible through CCFWE’s website, email lists, newsletters, media, and social media feeds.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, or a related field or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 4-6 years of experience in social work working with vulnerable populations, victim support services, with a focus on trauma-informed care.
  • Strong understanding of the social services system, community resources, and victim rights.
  • Ability to develop educational content and conduct community outreach.
  • Excellent communication, advocacy, and counseling skills.
  • Familiarity with legal processes and community referral networks for victims of violence.

Position Summary:
We are seeking a Senior Communication, Marketing and Digital Specialist who is passionate about social justice and gender equality. The ideal candidate will manage CCFWE digital marketing platforms—including the website, social media accounts, and email campaigns—while bringing innovative ideas to life. They should possess a thorough understanding of major social media tools, up-to-date marketing strategies, and a desire to deliver impactful results. The Specialist will collaborate effectively with the organization’s team, volunteers, and both internal and external stakeholders to ensure that all campaigns and projects are delivered on time and meet the project and organization objectives.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Communications and Project Management

  • Collaborate with management to develop and implement an effective communications strategy tailored to our target audience.
  • Oversee and lead CCFWE awareness campaign, and advocacy events through all stages, including  planning, implementation, execution and evaluation.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and analyze marketing and communication KPIs to ensure high performance across all campaigns, maintain benchmarks, and deliver recommendations for improvement.
  • Co-write, edit, and distribute compelling digital marketing content, such as publications, press releases, website content, reports, and speeches, to effectively communicate the organization’s activities, products, and services.
  • Research, develop, and implement new communications programs, including direct mail, social media, and media relations formats, while writing and pitching media backgrounders and press releases based on project proposals.
  • Design and coordinate the production (approval, translation, printing, distribution) of external communication publications, including annual reports and a bi-annual newsletter.
  • In collaboration with the CCFWE team, manage integrated Direct & Digital Marketing campaign strategy.
  • Seek opportunities to enhance CCFWE’s brand reputation, this includes (Creating a tool for National Taskforce members to share resources.
  • Manage and oversee volunteers, interns, and writers who support the organization’s work, ensuring effective coordination and productivity.

Stakeholder Engagement and External communication

  • Manage and document communication relationships with members, government officials, key partners, and stakeholders to drive system change.
  • Support communication outreach for CCFWE TD Project programming
  • Identify appropriate communications channels for sharing CCFWE and organization stories/ messaging for system change.
  • Coordinate, facilitate, and record all the meetings of CCFWE’s Project Advisory Committee

Media and Digital Marketing 

  • Create and schedule posts for all social media channels and CCFWE’s website.
  • Collect data and work with the Manager to report findings and provide insights to the Executive Director.
  • Deliver engaging and timely social media content that maintains our brand and strategic priorities, while enhancing online engagement.
  • Execute social media strategy across all channels to drive organizational messages, appeals, website traffic, and build brand and issue awareness.
  • Develop and execute social media campaigns for key dates e.g. help us rise campaign
  • Collaborate with the program team in developing and posting stories, collecting pictures and articles to raise awareness of CCFWE’’s work, demonstrating impact, promoting campaigns, etc.
  • Maintain records of media coverage and collate analytics and metrics

Essential Qualifications:

  • Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, international relations or equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working in non for profit advocacy/policy/ marketing and social media management ideally within the social services sector.
  • Excellent communication and advocacy skills – particularly in the areas of women’s rights, human rights, domestic abuse, equity and/or social justice.
  • Strong knowledge of web-based knowledge management systems, social media algorithms, and the use of analytics and statistics.
  • Creative and engaging methods for audience interaction, with a comprehensive understanding of working with Canva, Constant Contact, Hootsuite and MailChimp.
  • Expertise in marketing and communications, brand management, programmatic communications, digital communications, social media, and public engagement.
  • Proven experience in effective communications, including an understanding of how to utilize news media, and strategic placement of policy-related messages to persuade audiences.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret key policy positions and provide thoughtful recommendations that capture attention.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to craft correspondence suited for various audiences in both English and French.
  • Hands-on experience in developing community engagement strategies, communication plans, fundraising, marketing initiative and national advocacy campaigns
  • Excellent interpersonal and networking skills, with a high degree of cultural awareness and sensitivity, enabling effective engagement with diverse audiences, including civil society, experts, donors, and government representatives.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills, with the ability to juggle multiple tasks and competing priorities.
  • Experience working with third party contractors, agencies and/or service providers.

Assets

  • Prior experience doing communications and marketing work on a National level
  • Someone who has lived experience and a proven track record working with vulnerable populations.

About the Role:  The Program Director, acting as the head of programs, is a key leadership position responsible for overseeing all projects and initiatives. This position requires a strategic, growth-oriented leader focused on developing innovative
solutions, monitoring program effectiveness, and identifying opportunities for expansion and sustainability. The Program Director will work closely with the Executive Director and senior leadership team to ensure the organization’s work aligns with its
mission and strategic goals.  This role involves providing visionary leadership and oversight to ensure the successful execution of all programs while continually seeking ways to enhance and broaden the organization’s impact. Additionally, the Program
Director will identify new funding opportunities, cultivate partnerships, and spearhead efforts to drive organizational growth.

Reporting to: Executive Director

Key Responsibilities: 

Leadership and Organizational Development: 

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director to provide overall leadership, vision, and direction to the programs and projects.
  • Ensure that program strategies, plans, and operations align with CCFWE’s mission, values, and long-term goals.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and productive organizational culture that promotes collaboration and accountability.

Organizational Growth and Opportunity Development: 

  • Identify opportunities for organizational growth by expanding programs, services, and partnerships.
  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with donors, funders, and other key stakeholders to secure resources for new and existing initiatives.
  • Develop proposals for new projects and partnerships that align with the organization’s goals and mission.
  • Stay informed of industry trends, policy changes, and funding opportunities, positioning the organization to take advantage of new growth opportunities.

Project Oversight and Monitoring 

  • Oversee the implementation of all programs and projects, ensuring they meet agreed-upon timelines, deliverables, and objectives.
  • Develop and implement systems to track project performance, outcomes, and impact, ensuring that projects are executed within their defined scope, budget, and timelines.
  • Monitor compliance with funder requirements and agreements, providing regular reporting and updates to stakeholders.
  • Identify potential project risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Support the implementation of CCFWE’s strategy, collaborating closely with the CEO and senior management team.
  • Oversee grant-funded projects, ensuring timely and accurate reporting to funders.
  • Monitor project execution to ensure delivery on time, within scope, and within budget.
  • Lead evaluations of program effectiveness, using data-driven insights to measure impact and identify areas for improvement.
  • Provide regular updates on project outcomes to the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and other stakeholders.

Financial Management 

  • Collaborate with the finance team to ensure financial sustainability, focusing on budgeting, forecasting, and managing program funds.
  • Monitor the financial health of all programs and maintain transparency in financial operations.
  • Ensure that expenditures align with approved budgets and comply with funding agreements.
  • Assist in fundraising initiatives and actively participate in donor relations to secure future funding opportunities.

Staff Development and Management: 

  • Provide guidance and support to the management team, project leaders, and staff members.
  • Promote professional development opportunities to foster continuous growth within the team.
  • Conduct performance reviews to ensure staff members are aligned with CCFWE’s goals and objectives.
  • Encourage practices that support mental and emotional well-being, allowing staff to thrive while delivering high-quality work.

Strategic Planning: 

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director to develop long-term strategic plans that drive organizational growth.
  • Lead the development of annual plans and performance goals in alignment with strategic objectives.
  • Identify emerging trends and opportunities to advance the organization’s mission.
  • Prepare and present comprehensive reports to the Board of Directors, funders, and stakeholders, highlighting key program achievements, challenges, and opportunities.

General Duties: 

  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Executive Director.

Qualifications: 

  • Master’s degree or Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, International Development, non-profit management or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Additional certifications or training and experience in trauma-informed care, gender-based violence, or working with vulnerable populations are considered assets.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in program management or leadership within a non-profit organization, preferably in areas related to women’s empowerment or social justice.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing multi-stakeholder partnerships and overseeing projects, with strong financial management skills in budgeting and financial oversight.
  • Strong leadership and people management abilities, employing a collaborative approach to decision-making.
  • Knowledge of donor relations, stakeholder engagement and strategic non-profit communication
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse communities, build partnerships, and excel in public speaking and advocacy.
  • Experience collaborating with Boards of Directors, funders, and government agencies, with a proven ability to build and sustain partnerships with diverse stakeholders, including donors and community organizations.
