This app is for victims and survivors of Economic Abuse. Survivors encounter tactics such as controlling spending and limiting access to financial information. They are also people who face significant financial barriers, hindering access to essential resources like basic needs such as medication, food, loans, employment, access to transportation, telecommunication and education.
Based on our research conducted in 2021 in the Ottawa region, it was found that 30% of victims had their government support (Ontario Works, ODSP, CERB, etc.) taken by abusers, and 93% of participating victim-survivors had been deprived of access to their own money, having their paychecks or financial aid taken away. Additionally, 84% had debt accumulated under their name, while over 90% had any financial decision-making power taken away from them. Furthermore, in our national research study, 74% of social service providers pointed out the lack of available resources and systems for assisting victims of Economic Abuse (Read). Survivors are struggling to navigate the system to access economic resources due to the absence of a well-structured referral framework.
With these findings in mind, our app aims to provide support and resources to individuals who have faced such forms of abuse, helping them regain financial independence and security.
WHAT
STEAR (Support Tool for Economic Abuse Recovery) is a trauma-informed web and mobile app that prioritizes the security and privacy of survivors of Gender-Based Violence (GBV). Crafted as a secure and untrackable platform, it provides a confidential space for women who have experienced Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and Economic Abuse. Functioning as a user-friendly and privacy-focused hub, STEAR provides centralized information on safety, financial matters, and legal resources. This secure one-stop-shop for GBV victims connects them with essential resources, allowing them to rebuild economic security during and after an abusive relationship. STEAR’s commitment to user well-being is underscored by its comprehensive insights into Economic Abuse, a sensitive relationship questionnaire, safety planning tips, and specific resources for achieving economic independence and freedom.

WHY
In the past four years, we have facilitated 85 workshops for victims of Economic Abuse in collaboration with shelters across Canada. Additionally, we have conducted various grassroots consultations with survivors. A post-training survey highlighted a common concern among the majority of survivors: a lack of coordinated information to aid in their healing and recovery from Economic Abuse. As an organization dedicated to supporting survivors, we believe it is essential for victims to access comprehensive resources in one centralized location to prevent further traumatization. This belief has led us to develop the STEAR app, empowering survivors to gather the necessary tools, break the cycle of abuse, and embark on a path towards healing and independence.
